For many of us, reminiscing about childhood trips to the beach evokes visions of a sleepy beach town where sand dunes outnumber the houses. If you want to give your children this same experience, Ocean Isle Beach is the place for you. Even though Ocean Isle Beach has grown into a vibrant beach town with abundant choices of vacation rentals, numerous seaside activities, and serene coastal views, the island has managed to hold onto its casual, low-key vibe from vacations past.
Island of Condos
When you do visit Ocean Isle Beach you may find that it somehow seems taller. This is due to one of the features that makes Ocean Isle Beach unique among the Brunswick Islands, the abundance of condos. Local codes that allow taller buildings give you a large selection of condos to choose from with different styles, amenities, and pricing options.
The Winds Resort Beach Club
The only beach resort found on the Brunswick Islands is The Winds Resort. With a spectacular oceanfront setting, guests can enjoy an oceanside pool, whirlpool, and tiki bar. It’s a beautifully landscaped property with dense foliage that provides a cooling shade from the hot sun. Jump onto a complimentary bike for a self-guided tour of the oceanfront homes or slide into one of the hammocks for an afternoon snooze. And of course, enjoy the panoramic oceanfront view.
Experience the Waves
For a fun time out on the waves, sign-up for a surf or standup paddleboard lesson with Carolina School of Surf. They offer both group and private lessons. Kids aged 6 to 15 years of age can learn how to surf at Kids Surf Camp. It’s a great way for children to ride the waves and have fun in a healthy way.
Surfing and standup paddleboard is a full body workout for all ages. The surfing lessons are held at the beach access at Ocean Isle Beach Community Center. Carolina School of Surf offers standup paddleboard tours on calm waters through canals that give riders a chance to get immersed in the natural beauty of North Carolina’s coast.
Silver Coast Winery
Adults can enjoy a wine tasting while their kids go on a scavenger hunt. Inside the winery, kids are given a list of hidden object such as a spider and angel to find. Once the kids find everything, they are rewarded with a popsicle as their parents sample on red, white, and blush wines.
Ferry Landing Park
Ferry Landing Park is the site of the original ferry crossing to Ocean Isle Beach. Here visitors will find a beautiful waterfront park with a gazebo, picnic tables, and fishing piers. Everywhere you look you will be taking in the beautiful Intracoastal Waterway views. Don’t forget to bring a fishing pole or clam rake, but be sure to obtain a North Carolina fishing license before fishing off any deck or beach strand.
Dine in Calabash
Just a short 20-minute ride away, the small fishing town of Calabash awaits those craving a good plate of local seafood. Calabash is famous for their calabash-style way of cooking local seafood, which is lightly battered and fried to order. A basket of warm, soft hushpuppies will land on every table. Oh, there are over 30 restaurants to choose from, so head on over to begin your culinary tour of a famous fishing port in the southern most part of Brunswick County.
